Laila Ghofran - Aktar Men Ay Wa't

The majority of Laila Ghofran's 2005 album was overshadowed greatly by her hit single Assahelhalak (Let Me Simplify it for You). However, you owe it to yourself to give this album a listen. As usual, Laila's album is made up of mostly Egyptian songs, but she also sang in the Rai style here. Eshkoun is a remake of a song from her homeland, Morocco, and works well with her unique vocals.

Madeleine Matar - Ala Bali Hawak

Madeleine Matar's second album, Ala Bali Hawak, brought the success that Madeleine did not meet with in her first album, Raydah. The album is a combination of Egyptian, Lebanese, and even Europop styles with famous musicians such as Marwan Khoury, Boudi Na'oum, Ziad Boutros, Salim Salameh, and Ahmed Mohie.

Mayssam Nahas - Bonita

Mayssam's 2003 album was a enormous hit for her and shows the first fruits of her collaboration with her now ex-husband, Roger Abi Aqil, who composed five of the ten tracks. Mayssam met with great success with such songs as Lamouni, Nar Nar, Bonita, and Kol El Shouq (composed by Turkish composer Altan Seytin).

Mayssam Nahas - Kaddab Kebir

When Mayssam Nahas' fourth album, Kaddab Kebir, came in 2006, it had cavernous shoes to fill. Mayssam's past two albums, Bonita and Fakart Ketir, had been hits and she was expected to follow them up. However, the most significant change that came in her new album was the absence of Roger Abi Aqil, her now ex-husband. Mayssam instead worked with several newer composers such as Rawad Raad, Haitham Zayyad, Shadi Farah, and Hanel Nabil. The title song, Kaddab Kebir, became one of 2006's biggest hits, and Mayssam proved that she does not have to depend on any one person to secure success. Rouwad Raad's two compositions, Olt La La and Kif Habbaytak are great also.

Julia Boutros - Ahebba'i

This song dates back to 2006, and was released after the Israeli-Hezbollah war in Lebanon. The song's lyrics are based on a letter from Hassan Nasrallah to his troops. The song is composed by Ziad Boutros (Julia's brother), and arranged by Michel Fadel. Enjoy the song at 256 Kbps, but please if you like it, buy the original CD from any music store. All proceeds go towards the Ahebba'i fund which rebuilds Lebanese homes destroyed in the war.

Cyrine - Aleik Oyouni

Lebanese singer/actress Cyrine Abdelnour's second album is (arguably) a much better effort than her first. However, most of the songs are still composed by Cyrine's producer, Jean Saliba, who is notorious for purchasing the rights to reproducing Turkish songs. Cyrine did breakout with Law Bass Ef Eini and Aleik Oyouni, composed by Walid Sheraqi (composed Kol Youm Fi Omri for Elissa) and Nouhad Najjar (composed Erga' Lel Shouq for Elissa). Overall, the album is enjoyable and made up of songs with Arabic and Turkish instruments, with the exception of Law Bass Ef Eini, which was given a Latin arrangement by Turkish musician Ufuk Yeldirim:

Hasna - Bamba

Moroccan singer Hasna's hit 2003 album was a tough act to follow. Therefore, when Bamba was released in 2005, it could not help being overshadowed. Shoufo Shoufo (Look, Look) was an infectious summer hit for Hasna, but the rest of the album was overlooked for the mostpart. Hasna sang in the Moroccan, Lebanese, and Egyptian Arabic dialects, and did it quite well in her unique style. Keep in mind, she may be Moroccan, but at this point in her career Lebanese producer Jean Saliba managed her musical choices, and it shows.

Warda - Harramt Ahebbak

Algerian legend Warda's successes can be divided into two categories; the tarab songs and the songs that helped give birth to modern Arabic pop. Songs like Aw'ati Btehlaw (Time Becomes More Beautiful), Akdeb Aleik (I Would Be Lying), and Fi Youm We Leila (In a Day and a Night) defined Warda's early career, and made her a legend in a business that was flooded with new talent. However, it is Warda's collaboration with Egyptian composer Salah El Sharnoubi in the early 1990s that defined her late career and gave way to the new wave of shorter, and more pop-influenced Arabic music. One of the greatest collaborations between Warda and Salah was Harramt Ahebbak (I've Forbidden Myself from Loving You):

Assi Al Hillani - Etr El Mahabba

Lebanese singer Assi Al Hillani has built a reputation of excellence, and though this album is early in his chain of successes, it remains one of his most memorable albums. Assi, as always, explores countless styles in this album. Dayem Doum (Always Forever) is a typical Boudi Naoum composition, with an upbeat western pop feel, while songs like Samma'ni Kalam, Howara, and Telli have a more authentic Lebanese feel. Oyounou Al Shawq (Eyes of Love) and Admantou Hawaki (I Am Addicted to Your Love) both show Assi experimenting with poetry in fos'ha (classical) Arabic, but while the former has a classical Arabic feel, similar to Kadim Al Sahir, the latter combines both classical and modern elements, something that was relatively new in 2001, and was done also by Yuri Mrakadi in Arabiyon Ana that year.

Mayssam Nahas - Mahdoum

Mayssam Nahas' 2008 album is arguably her best so far with so many genres fit on one CD. She has explored Iraqi, Egyptian, and Lebanese dialects and in numerous forms. Mahdoum (Loveable) exhibits the best vocal skill Mayssam has shown so far, and she has worked with numerous musicians she has never before collaborated with such musicians as Yaser Jalal (who composed Hasna's hit Shoufo Shoufo), Jean Saliba, Aytekin Kurt (who recently remixed Jan Jnouni for Assi Al Hillani), Yehia El Hassan, and George Marderosian. Mohamed Kebbi (a.k.a. Beirut Biloma) does an amazing job arranging Mogarrad Sou'al, and along with Mayssam's expressive voice you are transported to another time. Apart from a few hiccups on Betfa'el Fik and Hatrouh Ba'id, Mahdoum is one of 2008's best, with songs that feel modern but have a refreshing air of nostalgia. It's worth noting that Habib El Rouh is a cover of Wallah Ma Faragni, a song from Abeer Fadda's 2005 album, Inta Malak. Mayssam makes the song her own however, with very different arrangement and a slower, more heartfelt approach.

Ibtessam - Ibtessam

Moroccan vocalist Ibtessam's second album is a 16-track journey through various styles of Egyptian and Khaliji/Gulf music. Her vocal style is reminiscent both of Egyptian singer Angham and fellow Moroccan singer Jannat. Ibtessam's sophomore album is a solid addition to her budding reportoire, with her single Mel Akher already a hit.

Julia Boutros - La B'ahlamak (testing)

Julia Boutros's three-year absence from the music scene after the release of her 2001 album, Bi Saraha, turned out to be the best thing she could have done. Julia returned in 2004 with this eight-track masterpiece, La B'ahlamak. The album remains her most successful, with defining hits such as La B'ahlamak (Not In Your Dreams) and Ala Shou? (What For?). In typical Julia fashion, there is also a song about patriotism and freedom, Betnaffas Horriyeh (I Breathe Freedom).
