Fairuz - The Very Best of Fairuz

The prospect of compiling a greatest hits album for Fairuz must have been daunting to say the least. While this album is by no means the definitive collection, nor does it include all of her iconic hits, it is a quick taste of what made this woman into the legend she is today. The album has many styles, ranging from folk music and Arabic pop to classical renditions and European styles. There are samplings of her work from the stage and the screen, such as Ya Moukhtar El Makhatir and Ya Tair, as well as songs that have reach iconic status such as A'tini El Naya, Addaysh Kan Fi Nas, and Habbaitak Bel Saif. The fact that at least half of the songs on this album have been covered or translated into different languages is a testament to the legacy that Fairuz, Ambassador to the Stars, has left.

Diana Haddad - Ahla Aghani (Best of)

This album is a compilation of the best of Diana's early work, from 1996 to 1999. Diana is one of the few singers to have tasted success from her first song, and then been able to sustain it for over a decade. From the very beginning, Diana, who was born in Lebanon, raised in Kuwait, and lives in Dubai, sang in her native dialect as well as Egyptian and Khaliji. Her hit debut single, Saken is included, as well as her first Egyptian songs; Yamma Ya and Emshi Wara Kedbohom. The Lebanese songs that defined her early career, such as Ahl El Esheg, Anideh, and Legaitak, are also featured alongside her pan-Arab 1998 hit Ammaneih. Ammaneih was remade by Turkish singer Burcu Güneş in the same year and met with similar success. Composers featured here include George Marderosian, Imad Shamseddine, Riyad El Hamshari, and Ihsan El Mounzer.

Various Artists - Dance H1ts

As simply as the title states, this album is a collection of some of the top Arabic hits released between 2006 and 2008, remixed into dance songs by Aytekin Kurt. The album opens with Tigi Mennak, originally a typical Madkour maksoum song, now remixed into a great dance song. Aytekin successfully transforms Ensa Elli Rah, Ayami Bik, Hayda Haki, Nwakel Aleik Rabbi, Aini Alaik, and Bihen, making you listen to them as if they were new again. The majority of the songs are great dance songs, what Aytekin does best, while Saber's is turned into a hip-hop song, and Amal and Wael's are turned into mellower, chillout songs. Aytekin keeps the original strings in many of the songs, keeping the oriental origins of the music intact. The less interesting songs, Eini Aal Gharam and Ana Wel Lail, were not remixed as smoothly, and Aletli Oul drowns the vocals out too much for this listener. Nasser El As'ad and Cem Erman collaborate on Nour El Sahar, taking Erman's Gümüş theme and turning it into a full-blown dance song, with Assi Al Hillani's expressive voice taking it to new places. Definitely one of the best compilations this year, Dance H1ts is for fans of dance and club music as well as those simply looking to rediscover the songs they love already.
